Washington, D.C. --- House Armed Services Committee Chairman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) today released the following statement regarding the final select committee report on Hurricane Katrina. The report was prepared by the Select Bipartisan Committee to Investigate the Preparation for and Response to Hurricane Katrina Committee, which was chaired by Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA).
Hunter’s statement follows:
“We applaud Rep. Tom Davis and the members of the Select Committee for producing a comprehensive report outlining the federal, state and local government responses to Hurricane Katrina.
“I’m glad the Select Committee recognizes the invaluable role that the men and women of our Armed Forces played in helping victims and the entire Gulf Coast region immediately following the crisis.
“Members of the House Armed Services Committee will carefully review each finding within our jurisdiction and take appropriate action to address identified weaknesses in coordination between the Department of Defense, the National Guard, other federal agencies, and state and local governments. The Committee welcomes the report and will address the findings during the remainder of the 109th Congress.
“At the same time, we send our thanks to the men and women of the military who immediately responded to this disaster, many of them having just returned from combat in Iraq.”
