Thornberry Announces New Armed Services Leadership Team

WASHINGTON - Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, today announced a new staff leadership team for the Committee. Beginning September 5, Jen Stewart will assume the role of Staff Director. Jenness Simler will continue to serve as Deputy Staff Director. Prior to joining the Committee, Stewart served as National Security Advisor to Speaker Bohener and Speaker Ryan. She currently serves as the Senior Advisor to General Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In announcing the leadership team, Chairman Thornberry said:

Thornberry Comments on Navy Readiness

WASHINGTON - Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee made the following comment after the USS John S. McCain collided with a commercial vessel off Singapore. The collision is the fourth major accident involving the US Pacific Fleet this year, and has prompted the Chief of Naval Operations to impose a 24 hour operational pause to review training and procedures. Last week, the Marine Corps instituted a similar operational pause after a series of fatal aircraft accidents.

Thornberry on Marine Corps Flight Pause

WASHINGTON - Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX) made the following statement regarding the Marine Corps decision to require all aviation units to pause operations for 24 hours over the next two weeks in order to address safety concerns. The House Armed Services Committee has strongly and repeatedly raised concerns about aviation readiness in the Marine Corps and other Services since the Spring of 2016. Since that time Marines have suffered 18 “Class A Mishaps”- accidents that result in the loss of lives or of the aircraft. 22 Marines died in those accidents.

Rogers/Cooper Weigh in on GPS Ocx & Fab-t Programs

WASHINGTON - The Committee has recently learned of additional space acquisition failures: GPS Operational Control System (GPS OCX) and the Family of Advanced Beyond Line of Sight Terminal (FAB-T) program. GPS OCX, which is need to provide enhanced cyber security to the GPS constellation and to control the next-generation of GPS-III satellites, has now slipped further behind in the schedule DOD committed to last year, and has now grown in cost by $630 million. The FAB-T program has now apparently slipped behind by a year. This is a critical program (first started in 2002) to field terminals to use the Advanced Extremely High Frequency satellite system. This system is part of the President’s ability to command and control U.S. nuclear forces. After learning of these USAF acquisition failures, Chairman Mike Rogers of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee and Ranking Member Jim Cooper released this joint statement:
