STEFANIK ON QUARTERLY CYBER UPDATE

Mar 1, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities, made the following remarks after the subcommittee's classified Cyber Operations Quarterly update:

"Today, the Emerging Threats and Capabilities Subcommittee received its regular, classified Cyber Operations Quarterly update.

While this was chaired by the subcommittee, the briefing was open to all members of the full committee and was widely attended. This was our third committee event this week focusing on cyber warfare.

At today’s briefing, members received a full update on the development of our cyber mission forces, as well as ongoing cyber operations and defensive measures undertaken by the Department of Defense.  We also discussed many important policy questions, including the relationship between the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command.

As part of its regular congressional oversight, the Department of Defense is mandated by law to keep the committee informed of all cyber activities on at least a quarterly basis.

The committee, and the Emerging Threats and Capabilities Subcommittee in particular, continues to examine all aspects of our cyber warfare capabilities, authorities, and policies to ensure DoD remains properly aligned to deal with state and non-state threats alike. This year, the subcommittee also intends to take a long-term, strategic look at cyber warfare to ensure proper investments are made and to prevent over-investment in the wrong areas."
