THORNBERRY ON NUCLEAR POSTURE REVIEW

Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Rep Mac Thornberry (R-TX), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, made the following remarks upon the public release of the Nuclear Posture Review:

“America’s nuclear deterrent is the cornerstone of our national defense. Maintaining a credible deterrent in an increasingly volatile and dangerous world is essential. The Nuclear Posture Review sets out a responsible and sustainable path forward; building on policies that have kept us safe for a generation and adapting capabilities to new threats. It assures that our deterrent will be taken seriously by our adversaries and allies alike, while keeping the total cost below 7% of what the Department of Defense spends to protect the country.

The programs that support our deterrent, from nuclear plants and labs, new ballistic missile submarines, a modern bomber program, and our ICBMs, are already broadly supported in Congress and by the American people. Like other national security programs, they depend on adequate and reliable funding from Congress. The NPR is a sober reminder of how important delivering that funding is to America’s security.”
