Nuclear Labs Crumbling
THE PROBLEM:
As CNN reported last year, the infrastructure within the Department of Energy (DOE) that provides nuclear weapons to our military is decrepit and falling apart, with a $3.7 billion backlog in deferred maintenance and repair needs. In many cases, the physical structures date back to the 1940s and 1950s.
WHAT WE ARE DOING TODAY:
Under the CR, critical nuclear modernization and recapitalization programs are being short-changed and delayed
WHAT WE COULD BE DOING:
The House authorized more than $1.2 billion in additional funding over the CR level to the DOE's nuclear weapons activities and allows the DOE to begin rebuilding its Manhattan Project-era nuclear weapons production facilities.
