Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL), the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, called on the U.S. to build three Virginia-class attack submarines a year Wednesday at the Submarine Industrial Base Council's Supplier Days event.

Rogers said he supports Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michael Gilday's goal of growing the Navy to over 500 manned and unmanned ships.

Gilday called for the Navy to have a total of 70 attack submarines, along with 12 ballistic missile submarines.

A multiyear procurement of these attack submarines would save the Navy money and time, Rogers said.

"Building two attack subs a year is not going to cut it, it's not going to put a dent in our 66-sub goal," Rogers said. "We need to expand our industrial base to three attack subs per year."

The Biden administration needs to commit to growing the Navy, Rogers said.

"Most importantly, we need to see the funds for it in [the administration's fiscal year 2023] budget request," he said.
