Chairman Thornberry (R-TX) and Ranking Member Smith (D-WA), of the House Armed Services Committee made the following statement on Iraq Train and Equip Language in the NDAA:
"Our commitment to Iraq's sovereignty and stability remains clear. To continue to demonstrate this commitment, our defense bill includes a measure to encourage the Government of Iraq to join together with the Kurds and the Sunni tribes to defeat our common enemy--ISIL. Members reiterated the importance of unity and inclusion in the fight against ISIL when Prime Minister Al-Abidi was here a few week ago. We worked in a bipartisan manner to further clarify our commitment to a stable and sovereign Iraq in this bill. All parties within Iraq, led by the Government of Iraq, must work together to achieve a stable and sovereign Iraq. This is in the United States' national security interest."
