LOSING TIME: Nuclear Labs Crumbling
|“Every day we live under a continuing resolution is a day we do damage to our military.” - Mac Thornberry, Chairman, House Armed Services Committee
Nuclear Labs Crumbling
As CNN reported last year, the infrastructure within the Department of Energy (DOE) that provides nuclear weapons to our military is decrepit and falling apart, with a $3.7 billion backlog in deferred maintenance and repair needs. In many cases, the physical structures date back to the 1940s and 1950s.
WHAT WE ARE DOING TODAY:
Under the CR, critical nuclear modernization and recapitalization programs are being short-changed and delayed
WHAT WE COULD BE DOING:
The House authorized more than $1.2 billion in additional funding over the CR level to the DOE’s nuclear weapons activities and allows the DOE to begin rebuilding its Manhattan Project-era nuclear weapons production facilities.
