Today, Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, made the following remarks on the administration's budget proposal: "It is clear to virtually everyone that we have cut our military too much and that it has suffered enormous damage. In fact, the more we investigate, the deeper the damage we find. Unfortunately, the Administration's budget request is not enough to repair that damage and to rebuild the military as the President has discussed. "But, it is absolutely essential that we act urgently to repair and rebuild our military. It is morally wrong to task someone with a mission for which they are not fully prepared and fully supported with the best weapons and equipment this nation can provide. Our Committee has found serious shortcomings today, and they will worsen without immediate action. "I appreciate the Administration's proposal for additional defense spending this year. It is needed and will give us a head start on improving readiness and replacing old equipment. But, it is only one step. We must complete this year's work by passing the appropriations bill and the supplemental request, and then in turn adopt a budget for next year that meets the needs of the nation's national security." |
