The worst-kept secret in Washington is out: Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday said it is his “hope and expectation” that President Obama will close the military detention center at Guantanamo Bay before leaving office in January. Rep. Mac Thornberry, Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, made the following comments in response to this announcement:
"The only people who want to bring terrorist detainees to our shores are President Obama and Vice President Biden. That is the reason that bipartisan majorities have consistently acted to prevent them from being transferred here. I trust that even this Administration will not deny justice to 9/11 families by transferring the 9/11 detainees and the USS Cole bomber outside U.S. Custody.”
Mr. Obama has repeatedly vowed to close GTMO, but congressional lawmakers in both parties continue to block his efforts based on serious concerns about U.S. national security. The opposition is warranted and growing as the Administration is racing to release or transfer dangerous detainees before the President leaves office. Don’t take our word for it. Just take a look at the alt="(NULL)" from the latest transfer of 15 detainees to the United Arab Emirates on August 14th, which includes the transfer of a detainee the Obama Administration was previously holding for prosecution.
