WASHINGTON - The Honorable Howard P. "Buck" McKeon (R-Calif.) made the following statement after learning that General Joesph Dunford will be nominated to be Commandant of the Marine Corps.

"I was delighted to learn of General Dunford's nomination to be Commandant of the Marine Corps. With all the challenges he has faced in Afghanistan, his leadership has been remarkable. America's Marines will be in good hands with him at the helm.

"I am also grateful to General Amos for his tenure as Commandant. These past few years have been difficult, with both war and budget cuts taking a harsh toll. General Amos capably led the Marines through these challenges, and for that, he has our nation's humble appreciation.

"General Dunford's successes in Afghanistan are a reminder of how hard our troops have fought to win the peace there. They only reinforce the importance of a strong, post-2014 presence, which forges a lasting partnership with the Afghan people. It is my hope that General Dunford's replacement will conduct his own assessment of what is needed in Afghanistan after this year and will provide that assessment to the President.  The President must continue to focus on winning the peace rather than ideologically and arbitrarily sticking to the political timelines that he has set.

"I wish General Dunford, his replacement in Afghanistan, and General Amos all the best as they meet new challenges going forward. America has been fortunate to have their wisdom and leadership."
